Toby Ziegler’s Slave is a life-size aluminum sculpture that reflects his exploration of how objects gather and lose narratives over time. Inspired by Henri Matisse’s Madeleine I (1901) and echoing Michelangelo’s Dying Slave (1516), the work embodies a dialogue between historical and contemporary forms. Ziegler’s process combines digital modelling, clay coiling, and 3D printing, creating a sculptural form that blurs the boundaries between manual and mechanical production. Slave exemplifies his fascination with materiality, abstraction, and the intersection of traditional and digital techniques in contemporary art.
