Nic Deshayes

Inspired by microscope imagery of shampoo advertising, botanical studies and technical drawings, 'Crop' is a sculpture that meanders through the worlds of hairstyling, agriculture, geology and engineering. The body of the sculpture was cast from a creased block of clay, largely untouched from when it was removed from the bag, to replicate the roughness of flesh, skin, or soil. Dimpled and slightly textured it became the host for a crop of individually cast needles that have perforated its outer membrane like hairs ready to stand on end.
